Poland Mobilizes Air Force as Russia Strikes Ukraine
"On-duty fighter pairs and an early warning aircraft were scrambled, and ground-based air defense and radar reconnaissance systems reached the highest state of readiness," the command wrote on X, adding that the measures were strictly preventive and designed to safeguard Polish airspace — particularly along the volatile border with Ukraine, where Russian strikes have surged in recent days.
Polish jets and ground-based defense units remained on standby, ready to intercept any threat that approached or breached national airspace. Authorities were quick to emphasize that Polish territory was not violated at any stage of the assault.
The Polish Armed Forces Operational Command also extended its appreciation to NATO partners involved in the coordinated response, specifically citing the Allied Air Command and the air forces of Germany and the Netherlands.
Ukrainian officials confirmed that Russia carried out a coordinated overnight assault on Saturday, deploying a combination of ballistic missiles and kamikaze drones against the capital Kyiv and several surrounding regions. The attack represents one of the most severe escalations since Russia launched its full-scale invasion of Ukraine on February 24, 2022 — four years ago this week.
No claim of responsibility was issued by Moscow, and Ukrainian authorities continued assessing the full scope of the damage as emergency services responded across affected areas.
